Grandmother's Birthday

Dear Malik:

Today is the birthday of your grandmother, Cheryl D. Kling. It is her 59th birthday and I'm going to meet her at her work and take her out to lunch. I don't know if you celebrate birthdays. That last I knew you were being raised as a Jehovah's Witness and I know they do not believe in the celebration of birthdays. I never understood why it was acceptable to celebrate anniversaries but not birthdays since a birthday is essentially the anniversary of a person's birth.

I hope you are doing well!

School

Dear Malik:

I suspect you are about to start a new school year soon, or you have already started. I too am in school. I'm a senior at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio and I've been at Wright State University for a few years now. I really enjoy going to school and learning new things and meeting different people. I've developed a good relationship with many of the teachers I've taken and I enjoy the rapport generated from these relationships.

In college and university you select a major, which is your field of study. I'm majoring in Religious Studies and Philosophy and I like both of these subjects very much. I should graduate from Wright State in the Spring of 2008. I'm currently applying to graduate school. Graduate school is like a college or university but you don't start attending graduate school until you have graduated from a college or university with a bachelors degree. When I graduate from Wright State I should have two bachelors degrees. The graduate school I am applying to is Methodist Theological School in Ohio and it is located in Delaware, Ohio. I've visited there several times and I really like the school, and think it will be a good fit for me.

I often wonder how you like school and what subjects are your favorites. I also wonder if you are involved in activities at school. I wasn't very good at sports but when I was in High School I became involved in student government. I hope you do well this academic year!

Why this blog?

Dear Malik:

I created this blog because I wanted a way to communicate with you; a record of my attempt to express to you my thoughts and emotions. My father and I were not very close when I was growing up, a real tragedy. Now that my father has passed away I find myself thinking of him often and wishing I could have come to know him better than I did. While his health was deteriorating we tried to cultivate a new relationship, but it was the poor health that caught up to us and he died August 8th 2004. I wish you could have been at the funeral. I conducted the ceremony and it was beneficial in my mourning process.

It is also a tragedy the circumstances that lead to the divorce between your mother and I, and even more so the estrangement of you and I. I do not see you not because there is not a desire there. I want nothing else than to see you all the time, to get to know who you are and what you are interested in and to be a parent and a father. You mother and I cannot seem to get along well enough to help facilitate reasonable conditions for me to be in your life. I don't want this blog to become a vehicle for me to bad mouth your mother -- that is not its focus. However, I will say that I hope in the future she makes a change of heart and I can see you again.

I have been wanting to create a blog like this for a couple of years now. But it was been so difficult grappling with the feelings I have. It seems so foreign to me that a father cannot see his son! Hopefully, one day we will be good friends. That is my hope.

Love;

Dad
